AUMC/MVP, and Wesley Partnership

Asbury, Mount Vernon Place, and Wesley Partnership Conversation and Study To Promote Relationships and Reconciliation
September 8–October 13  The partnership between Asbury, Mount Vernon Place,
and Wesley Theological Seminary is deepening.  After engaging in three important
discussions over the summer that centered on racism in Methodism,  the historical
divide between the two partner congregations over this issue, and sharing of
our church histories, our dialogue continues in September.

All are invited to join our journey together each Wednesday evening beginning on
8 September for a series of 6 study sessions and conversation to promote
relationships and reconciliation.  Each week a Wesley Theological Seminary faculty member
will facilitate our use of the “Ministry of Racial Reconciliation” study guide that focuses
on grace, confession repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation.

We will gather from 6:45 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. each Wednesday, first at Asbury
and then alternate between Asbury and Mount Vernon Place.  We will conclude
our study on 13 October with a closing celebration and communal meal.
Given that the mission of our partnership is to build a foundational
relationship for engaging in joint ministry,we also invite everyone to bring ideas
for joint ministry areas/projects.

Please contact  Jesse James at 202.583.2007-h 202.491.2001-c if you
have any questions.

Sunday Service

Alternate location
Alternate location

This past Sunday we worshiped in a totally different setting than we are use to.  It was a more intimate setting, a setting that could create a higher sense of community, a setting that allows for more collaboration.  Sure this setting might not be comfortable and we might be in each other’s way or breathing each other’s air.  But this setting is also not as intimidating and it allows for people to come forward and share their feelings and thoughts more often.

I feel what went on this Sunday is what has been needed for awhile.  The spirit definitely moved through the room.  See I feel I could relate this back to events that would take place in an enormous stadium much like a sporting event or a concert.  The more expensive tickets are the ones that are closer to the action and the $50-80 seats are high and far this is because mostly everybody wants to be as close as possible to the action.  Relate this back to our church and we have the opposite (except for the few that have a reason for where they sit).

Is it because that we are close together that we feel a since of connection or is it because the setting is much less intimidating?

Either way it seemed a lot easier for the excitement to rise!!!

When the Leader Leaves

“When the cat is away the mice will play.” I know for sure most of you know or have heard of that saying or the like.  The moment after a leader leaves will tell how effective he/she was as a leader.  Will everybody as a group continue down the path that the former leader had set? Or will a new leader step forward and set a new path?

When one door closes, another one opens. You will never know what is behind that door until you take a step through it and take the risk. God will test you for your strength and then ultimately the experience will make you a stronger person no matter the outcome. You might ask, “What will I do if the leader leaves?” When a leader leaves, do not just sit still and wonder, stand up and do your part.

There are things that cannot happen until the leader leaves and you can be the person that will bring change.  Why wait for somebody else to bring change when you can do it yourself? The apostles came from being miracle watchers to miracle workers; you can do the same. You can change your job, community, state, country or even the world!!!

So what will you do when your leader leaves or when one isn’t present?  Will you sit on the side of the highway broken down? Or will you be out front leading the way?

“As my father has sent me so I send you”—John 20:21

Go and spread the word to any that will hear.
